BIPOC Parenting Series: Tosha's Story

As a community-focused company, Kabrita USA strives to be inclusive and to continuously celebrate diversity. In honor of Black History Month, Kabrita USA is featuring a BIPOC Parenting Series, for the entire month of February. The BIPOC Parenting Series centres BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) parents’ experiences. Our goal is to enhance greater representation of BIPOC parents in the media, as well as to amplify BIPOC voices and stories.

Today, we are sharing Tosha’s story about raising her boys with unconditional love and support as they navigate life.

Tosha's Story:

From the moment they made their entrance into this world with pigmented skin, our beautiful brown boys were labeled as “different.” Mama’s skin is a deep caramel latte color, and Daddy’s skin is the color of cream. Neither Mama nor Daddy will wear their skin, but we can walk alongside them.

Growing up, Mama had kinky hair that could not be tamed. The label “minority” was simply a coat she wore every day. Daddy’s childhood looked a lot different. No, there were not the racial jeers, but bullying was a regular occurrence.

One thing that we both had in common growing up was the support and love of family. Our beautiful boys, with sun kissed skin, will always have our support and help as they navigate life. As Mama and Daddy, we are raising our boys the very best we know how. We are teaching them to be proud of their Black heritage, their White heritage and celebrate everything “different” that makes them their unique selves.

We are listening to them, so that they feel heard. We are encouraging them, so that they feel affirmed. We are educating them, so that the doors available to them are endless. We are giving them undivided attention, so they know their worth. We are modeling kindness and strength, so they see that being both is okay. We are loving them unconditionally, so that they know real love and how to love others. We are teaching them to love all races, ethnicities, skin tones, and people.
